About

Science has always fascinated me and my work has a certain affinity with it. Photography is an unusual mixture of technique and perception: the camera acts as a surrogate eye, a mechanical observation device that enables us to capture an image.

I'm particularly interested in those areas where photography deviates from human perception. This is one of the reasons why I made a study of optical techniques that can be used to increase the scope of our perception. I've specialised in photography through the microscope and in stereoscopy and a combination of both. The past years I've started filming and making time lapse movies.

Working in the limbo inbetween art and science

I primarily work as an independent artist, but because my work brings together both art and science, a part of my images and films is being used as scientific illustrations.

Because I practice several specialistic techniques I am regularly asked to do commissioned work. Regarding the artistic aspects of his work, I thrive for tranquility in my images; the compositions are carefully balanced. This resembles the accuracy of a scientific approach. But often with a slight touch of absurdism.

Natural history

My work is somewhat related to Victorian traditions of microscopic slide making and the work of the 19th century naturalists. I'm also a big fan of Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, the 17th century draper from Delft who discovered the micro world. I am currently researching his first discovery of microbes. Here is an Article about the first microbe Van Leeuwenhoek described

In the past I’ve published regularly in Micscape Magazine and made various web pages, like the on-line Micropolitan Museum. It has always been my aim to promote micro-organisms. And hopefully my images encourage people to start working with a microscope.
